Getting to grips with PET Clear PET containers are becoming more and more common in the USA. Many users, such as WalMart of Bentonville, AR, Lipton of Englewood, NJ, or Knouse Foods of Brigleville, PA, for example, are full of praise for the unbreakable containers with their practical, moulded-in grip area above the label – the “easy grip“ bottles. Even 1.89 litre bottles of fruit juice are easy to pick up and pour thanks to the handy grip zone.

5 litres in PET The French drink more mineral water – either straight or mixed with cordial - than any other European nation. That’s why Danone France also supplies its “Volvic“ brand water in an economical and practical 5 litre PET container. The container, which can be laid on its side, is fitted with a hygienic dispensing valve and can be kept on the kitchen table or in the refrigerator. At point of sale the valve is protected by a transparent, shrink-sealed cover, and a convenient, firmly stuck-on handle makes the pack easy to carry home. Two self-adhesive labels explain how the pack is used and carry the necessary consumer data.

PET HELPS THIRSTY ATHLETES In the USA slim, lightweight clear PET bottles are enjoying huge popularity for sports drinks, and are ideally suited to the job. One outstanding example is the 710 ml Gatorade bottle from the Chicago, Illinois based company of the same name. The easy-to-grip bottle has a shrink label on the upper part. The screw-on closure is a newly developed twist-push-pull cap that is tamper-protected by a perforated shrink band. For added product protection the neck of the bottle is sealed underneath the closure with a tear-off foil. The twist-push-pull cap is easily opened and closed with one hand by rotating it through 90º which moves it upwards on a short spiral – a very useful feature when cycling, for instance.
At point of sale the bottles are presented in 4-packs held in a sturdy plastic carrier. The 4-pack carrier is produced from a roll, and includes a double-thickness, centrally located handle. It is pushed over the bottles from above, clipped into place and separated from the roll after every four bottles. Once the 4-pack, weighing only 3kg, has been carried home it is easily opened by pulling the tear-off tabs.
